Does Your Church Need a Colonoscopy “Prep”?

Do you know what a colonoscopy “Prep” is? Let me explain. When a colonoscopy is performed, a doctor takes a surgical instrument and goes up into the large intestine to see if there is any disease. The colon or large intestine needs a “Prep”! The “Prep” is a laxative (WHAT!) that allows the person to empty their GI tract and “get rid” of all the stuff! Ugh!!!

Ok, so now I will put this into church language! Many times, for to grow, a church has to “Prep” in order to “get rid” of some stuff. Yes, the church needs a “Prep”. Let’s consider “some” situations.

  1. Does your church need to “get rid” of the choir and replace it with an updated Praise Team…? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t. You decide.
  2. Does your church need to “get rid” of the ushers with the uniforms (you know the ones I’m talking about) with the black or gray suits and white-white Gloves…? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t? You decide.
  3. Does your church need to “get rid” of the communion cups and crackers and replace them with the pre-bought communion cups with the wafer on top…? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t …? You decide. Or has covid decided for you.
  4. Does your church need to “get rid” of the “tradition” of having certain people always sit in the same seat and won’t move no matter what…? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t …? You decide.
  5. Does your church need to “get rid” of the practice of letting only certain people do certain ministries “just because” …? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t. You decide.
  6. Does your church need to “get rid” of ministers in robes (say what!) and start dressing in regular street clothes …? (How about jeans???) Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t. You decide.
  7. Does your church need to “get rid” of the “habit” of NOT going around the community and asking the neighbors to join you on Sunday …? Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t. You decide.
  8. Does your church need to “get rid” of having ministries with the same leaders and not ever holding them accountable?… Well, maybe it does, or maybe it doesn’t. You decide!

And there are many, many, more examples, and situations. You decide. I have said all of this to liven up your thoughts and to generate some genuine reflection on how you might begin to take a serious look at how you might do some things differently or just plain “get rid” of! For some things, change is inevitable if you want to grow. Some things you may feel should never change, and that is why I said, “maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t” …. You decide.

But whatever you do, DO NOT dig your heels in and say @#$%^&* NO!
